Welcome to Kleinmond Animal Welfare
KAWS is nothing like the usual animal welfare society!
Just one look at the KAWS ADOPTION CENTRE tells you that this is a welfare society to be proud of! There are no rows of unhappy, caged dogs and cats awaiting their fate. Instead KAWS adoption cats live in a sunny lounge with their own garden and jungle gym! Their adoption dogs stay together in play yards, free to run and socialize! And there’s no limit to how long the animals are kept while awaiting adoption!
But KAWS' main focus is on preventing unwanted litters through sterilization, providing primary pet care for the poor and on pet care education. In interacting with animal owners on a daily basis KAWS also deals with the most horrifying cases of animal abuse.
VISION
Kleinmond Animal Welfare Society (KAWS) serves a very large area from Rooi Els to the R43. Our vision is that our communities will become caring and responsible pet owners… where animal welfare is only needed because owners have financial restraints and not because of a lack of care or pet ownership education.
MISSION
KAWS will pro-actively inspire caring and responsible pet ownership while undertaking animal welfare work within the communities we serve.
KAWS PRIME FUNCTIONS:
PROVISION OF PRIMARY HEALTH CARE, THROUGH KAWS, TO ALL ANIMALS of disadvantaged people. A means test is required.
KAWS hosts weekly Community Veterinary Clinics on its premises. A veterinarian examines the animals, de-worms, vaccinates, injects or provides basic advice and treatment. Owners of unsterilized animals are educated on the by-laws regarding sterilizing pets The KAWS office is open 6 days a week . Weather permitting community members can bring their dogs to be dipped against contagious parasites such as ticks, fleas and mange or get other pet care advice.
EMERGENCY WELFARE WORK and RELIEF OF PAIN AND SUFFERING OF PETS
KAWS assists with cost of emergency treatment of animals requiring veterinary care. In order to promote responsible pet ownership, KAWS recovers this from the owner.
KAWS KENNEL PROJECT
KAWS makes and repairs donated kennels and place these on loan in the yards of disadvantaged pet owners who are unable to provide their dogs with shelter. Currently more than 120 kennels are in the system!
PUBLIC LIAISON SERVICE
KAWS operates a land line and cell phone so that people can report lost and found pets. Anyone can call for emergency assistance. Unidentified injured animals are treated and their owners traced or kept at KAWS facility until they are re-homed. Reports of animal abuse are investigated.
KAWS ADOPTION CENTRE
KAWS has a cattery, kittenry and kennels, and can provide the following service: - Lost dogs are captured, advertised, housed, fed and treated if required. (The Hangklip-Kleinmond Municipality does not have a pound.) - Homeless animals, abandoned animals and unwanted puppies are fostered until a good home can be found. The numbers of animals housed at the KAWS facility has escalated as owners from all race groups as well as the elderly have to down-scale and cannot take pets with them so they sign over to KAWS or abandon their dogs and cats. KAWS serves animals in need in Kleinmond, Betty's Bay, Pringle Bay and Rooi Els
